3. Practices for healthy brain development
In the research section of this module, you saw some examples of studies that demonstrate babies are born with capacities for learning and interacting with others. Adults who care for babies and young children have a big responsibility. Knowing the basics of early brain development helps caregivers understand why certain routines and practices are important.
Learning about the importance of brain development is not about making babies “smarter”. It’s not about expensive toys or special programs. It’s about everyday nurturing experiences and learning.
The next video showcases adults and children around the world reading together in a variety of languages, along with explanations from two experts: Dr. Fraser Mustard and Dr. Janet Werker. As you watch the video, consider the impact on development of routine activities such as reading together.
Clearly, the closeness and comfort of a caring adult along with the words and pictures in a favourite book provide children with a multi-sensory experience that supports brain development and language development and also provides a way for adults and children to connect and build caring relationships. In the next video, the late Dr. Fraser Mustard, founder of the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research, explains the importance of stimulating the sensing pathways early in life and why it’s important to understand brain development in order to provide optimal stimulation.
Dr. Mustard points out a problem with the typical stroller design. Can you think of any ways to resolve this? Do you think it is important?
In the next clip, Dr. Rob Santos discusses the exquisite sensitivity of babies’ brains and the importance of everyday caregiving during this time.
Both Mustard and Santos refer to things adults can do to facilitate healthy brain development. The following parent handouts from Abilio provide some concise information and useful tips related to brain development. Abilio is formerly known as the Centre of Excellence for Early Childhood Development (CEECD) and the Centre de Psycho-Éducation du Québec (CPEQ).
In the rest of this section, you will take a closer look at ways to influence healthy brain development and overall well-being. Before going forward, see how you do on the next set of questions. These are based on information you will explore in more detail in this section.
