Wee monitor the pregnant women, where we begin preparation and evaluation of the risks. Visits to the doctor that is the health care system is very good. The visits to the doctor are every 15 days.

Yvonne, expectant Mother: I have the card there, I should have brought it. They keep track of everything on the card. They measure you, the height of the belly to see if it has grown, they weigh you every 15 days. Take your blood pressure, and they are constantly there for you. The nurse gives great care, she comes to see me almost every day…”How are you?”. Tests every three months. One trimester the hemoglobin tests, a serology test, everything. The attention and care are very good.

Dr. Maria Rosa Espinosa Forteza, Family Medical Centre, Havana:

During prenatal care, the mom-to-be also receives training of the Educate your Child Program. It’s not just after the baby is born, it starts when she begins carrying her baby, we provide her with advice and education during her medical consultations so the moms are prepared. The Educate your Child activities are not just taught to the mom but to the whole family.

Father attending an Educate your Child program with his son:

This is a family program, that’s why it’s called Educate your Child Program, it’s a program whose goals are directed towards the family. From the moment your wife is pregnant, you – as her husband – need to help her feel as good as possible. It’s not by giving her presents like soap or a brand new car, but praising her, helping her, washing the dishes, cleaning, caressing her belly, taking to the child, chatting with her, it’s important to make sure the baby feels the love of the dad.

Cuba also has a system of maternity homes for women who are experiencing challenges or risks during pregnancy. The service is preventative, and many Cuban women come for short periods of rest and care at some point during their pregnancy.

Each family’s introduction to Educate Your Child begins early, usually soon after they learn that they are expecting a baby.
