We\u2019ve been looking at access to prenatal care in the province in Manitoba. Unfortunately, at the national Canadian level we don\u2019t have any data on average timing of initiation of care and number of visits across the country so some of the provinces have been looking at this individually. I got interested in this topic because one of my earlier studies on risk factors for preterm birth showed that one of the potentially modifiable risk factors was an inadequate use of prenatal care. And so it kind of started me on the road to a program of research in prenatal care. So one of the first things we did was have a look at, well, how extensive is the problem? How many women are getting good prenatal care and what is the rate of inadequate prenatal care, which we would define as either having a late start to prenatal care or not getting enough visits in total compared to the national standards for what they should have or not having any prenatal care? <\/p>\n\n\n\n
So we did some research looking into that and what we found was that in spite of having a universal healthcare system in Canada where women don\u2019t have to pay for prenatal care visits and prenatal care is theoretically accessible to them, we found that there was wide regional variations in rates of inadequate prenatal care. So in Manitoba about 12% of women get inadequate prenatal care. One of the good things, I guess, is that only 0.4% get no care. So the proportion getting no care is quite low but overall 12% get inadequate prenatal care. And when we look at those rates by regions, what we find provincially is that the north has very high rates of inadequate prenatal care. And within the city of Winnipeg there are three inner city neighbourhoods that have very high rates of inadequate prenatal care compared to the suburbs ranging as high as, I believe it\u2019s 21% and in the suburbs it\u2019s mainly less than 5% of women getting inadequate care so that does raise concerns for us. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
