In 2019-2020, we found that the community of practice was a safe space for educators to be heard, to be seen, and to give and receive mutual support. And again, what educators told us was that actually getting together and again, getting together in that larger group with their community of practice or getting together with their peer mentor, that was self-care in itself. So interestingly, sometimes people are reluctant to get involved because they worry about the time commitment or they think I’m already very busy. The feedback we’re seeing and getting from our research is that it’s actually life giving to do this. So even though it’s counterintuitive to say yes to one more thing, it actually supports them as a person and as an educator. So, educators are able to share not just what’s happening in their work, but also what’s happening in their life. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
And we think about recently with the pandemic, we did have a program running 2020 to 2021, so during part of the pandemic. And again, it was a safe space where educators could come together, they could share concerns, they could share the questions and get that mutual support. So we\u2019re seeing that it is helping educators, not just to stay in the field, but to thrive. Just recently, we\u2019ve come back from some focus groups on the island, and we’re having experienced educators literally saying to us, without this, I would have left the field. So, it’s not just new educators, but it’s experienced educators who are saying it’s important for me to have a place where I can share, where I can debrief with someone, where I can get some support, because it just doesn’t happen in the workday. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Our research has shown that there is at times something positive about having other people who you don’t work with, who are able to give insight into your practice and have a different, have a fresh perspective because they’re not someone that necessarily is working with you every day or they may or may not be in a position of authority over you or a position of power. But really, the hope is that the concept of peer mentoring, the idea that each person has a value, each person on the team has a perspective to share, has wisdom. I hope that that would not just be within a peer mentoring community of practice, but that educators would take that to their workplace as well. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
