That’s an interesting question because I think what people are doing when they’re first working with children are trying to find all these strategies and techniques to make things go well. So, the idea that you should slow down and just watch is I think really counterintuitive to the work. So, I think you have to kind of hold that in your head-that really, how do I pause, how do I pause and notice, how do I pause and marvel, how do I pause and pay attention to my own reactions here that-that going alongside some of the strategies you’re learning as you know, to manage a group of children.

And I think everything in our profession conspires against reflective practice. I mean just the fact that we have this large group of children that we have to get through routines during the day means we’re always having to be a multitasker, right? Like what has to come next, what happened yesterday, what parent wants me to do here, what my director wants, what the ministry wants. It’s so many things going on. So, I think it’s a matter of really cultivating a practice to slow down and have that other part of your brain saying what are the details I see happening here? What do I love about what’s going on?

Because I also think that’s a real important piece. There are so many things unfolding in a group of children every minute. So, what are you going to pay attention to and why? So, to me it’s like why not pay attention to what you love that’s going on so that that can be what you help grow? And again it’s not easy. That’s why you call it practice, right, you have to practice slowing down, practice finding the details of what you love and then making sure you do that every day. And there’s not like steps to follow or boxes to check. I think it really is a personal journey. And I think a lot of people the reason they work with kids is because they delight in them, there’s something about being with them that draws them to that. So, that shouldn’t be a difficult thing, right? And if it is you should probably find a new job. Because if you can’t slow down and delight in children you probably don’t belong in a classroom full of them.

How do you get started with reflective practice?
