You know, I would tell my students that I worked with children for a long time before I had any early childhood education background even. And it’s two different situations. When you work with children where you’re just making sure that their custodial – their care, their health and safety are of your primary concern, but you’re not really thinking a whole lot about programming. And then after, when you have that curiosity and that wonder that comes with your skills and your knowledge but also your disposition to be reflective. The – your profession becomes a lot more interesting. The days go by a lot more quickly. You get more excited about what you’re doing. And you become better at it right? You’re continually learning.

You also become a mentor to others and you become a role model for others as well too, which, you know, makes you feel good about what you’re doing. So there’s definite benefits personally. Then your work with children is also having more of an impact, and your work with families as well too because you’re continually wondering how you can do things differently, better. You’re wondering about how the children and parents are experiencing the early learning setting. And so that’s going to have a positive impact on the children.

Plus you’re again being a model for children and parents on how to be reflective, how to question, how to try things differently, to be a divergent thinker, to be creative. And so you’re again creating that climate that makes it safe to do that.

For children, if they have a reflective practitioner as their early childhood educator, they are more free to follow their interests and their instincts, and you’re going to have situations where children are continually amazing the adults with what it is that they can do. It becomes a more democratic situation and you learn to share the power with the children, which is an expression that’s used by Carol Anne Wien that I love – that whole image of sharing the power with the children, where the children see that they also have a say in the decision making and what’s going to happen.

So then you’re having children growing up understanding their roles and their responsibilities as citizens. They see themselves as capable, they see themselves as competent, and they are also becoming critical thinkers. So that’s, you know, that’s wonderful benefits for reflective practice.

And then they’re being model for other children in terms of understanding, tolerance, being able to see other points of view. To be able to self-regulate in terms of being able to see what the feeling of the group is and how do I go with that? With what the group consensus is, or how do I lead, how do I follow? How do I question? How do I problem solve?

So the reflective practice is one contributing factor in terms of children being able to do that. There’s also, of course, other factors in terms of the environment – the qualifications of the educators and so on. But reflective practice certainly helps to encourage that.

So benefits for the staff in terms of reflective practice is that it makes your job a lot more interesting.
