Russell – parental leave policies
One of the helpful policy changes in the last decade and a half or so was the introduction of parental leave that included fathers. So fathers can now legally take a piece of the parental leave. So I think that’s been a benefit to families and to kids. I think that’s also been a difficult thing for a lot of guys because corporations haven’t necessarily sort of followed suit. Businesses might resist some of that. They can’t legally say no but I hear from dads a lot that when they’ve tried to take some of that time off, their friends give them a hard time about it. People at work say ,“hey, enjoy your holiday” and we know it’s not a holiday. So I think we have a long way to go to try to get solid family policy that really supports not just fathers but families in general to have good connections with their kids right from birth. I think it’ll take some generations to change kind of the societal mindset around some of that parental leave kind of things for men. But I think the guys that are – like even the boys growing up now who are seeing men take parental leave, maybe their dad took some parental leave and their dad has struggled with that. Hopefully by the time that boy is a dad and thinking about it, it might not be that big of an issue because it’s much more of a normalized thing.
