Phillips-Beck - breastfeeding decisions

Our research did find as well that women will have made their decision to breastfeed or not breastfeed by the time they have that child.  So it’s important to reach the women early in their pregnancy, to provide them with the information that would most likely encourage them to breastfeed and provide them with support while they’re still pregnant and making that decision. And information about; not just about what the benefits are for, in terms of nourishment and nutrition, but benefits for attachment, for building that relationship with that child I think is important to focus in on too in the education in the prenatal period. So increasing initiation rates in the community has to really consider pregnant women as soon as they are diagnosed with a pregnancy. That education, that opportunity needs to start at that point.
