Lye - Lifecycle diagram
So when we look for opportunities to intervene and support optimal development of children, I think it’s important to understand, that really there’s a life cycle, and that we need to intervene at each stage around that circle of life. So, obviously, what I’ve said is it’s important to intervene pre-pregnancy and pregnancy. That’s a time of huge development. Equally the child’s brain is developing very much in terms of its cortical development postnatally. And that’s a period of time when it’s really important to intervene and have optimal environments as well as the development of that microbiome. But I think it’s also important to look at adolescent period, particularly of young girls. And particularly in perhaps developing settings, or low resource settings, where not all women are; perhaps achieve all of the needs that they need to develop. So we are beginning to realize that the health and education of young women, who will soon be new mothers, is a critically important aspect. And so you can see the circle going from pregnancy, infancy, child development, the development in health and education of young women and back pre-pregnancy into pregnancy. And I think effective interventions are going to look at different interventions at different phases within that cycle.
