Corter – parent education research

A good example of that is a study that was done a number of years ago by Ho and Willms looking at the forms of parent education that predicted academic success across different economic levels, across different schools and they found that it wasn’t the coming to the school part that predicted how successful children would be, but rather the common thing that was predictive across all groups was how much the parents talked to the child about school and learning at home. That’s not helping with homework. It’s just talking about the day the child might have had, talking about the importance of education, talking about respecting the teacher or the childcare worker. So there was talk at home that predicted educational success, not whether the parents came and volunteered in school. So the net message is that parenting, and parenting at home is going to create the conditions for children’s academic success, for their ability to self-control and get along with others.
