Consider...Mirta
Three-year-old Mirta and her grandmother are attending the Educa a tu Hijo (Educate your child) program in a park near their home in a barrio in the outskirts of Havana. Mirta finds her friends and soon is caught up in playing make-believe “doctor”. Meanwhile, her grandmother is nearby involved in an animated discussion with the program leaders and other families about how last week’s activity went at home.
Later, Grandma and Mirta learn a new craft together and sing songs with the group. The children play once more while the adults review the coming week’s home activities, all designed to support development. Mirta comes to the program twice a week with her grandma, mother, or father. Mirta’s family has been involved with the program since early in her mother’s pregnancy and will continue until she is six.
